Interview: Bluefield Partners LLP
A couple of questions about...
Bluefield Partners LLP is a leading renewables investment adviser on behalf of both institutional and private clients. It has the expertise to develop, invest, optimise and operate renewable energy assets, with a focus on long-term and sustainable investments. With over 10 years of success and ~€1.7 billion of investments, Bluefield has developed one of the longest and highest performing track records in the sector, generating above target returns for its investors.
What are the diverse sources of renewable energies for your investments?
Having been in the renewable energy market since 2009, the Bluefield Group has developed strong expertise in long standing and new renewable technologies.
Our efforts are currently focused on the development, acquisition and management of wind, solar and battery assets across the United Kingdom and Europe. One of Bluefield’s strong aims is to ensure that a high level of expertise is provided across the full value chain of the technologies we invest in, though our integrated end to end platform.
How do you maintain relationship with the different affiliates with the Bluefield Group to maximise the growing opportunity in renewable energy?
The Bluefield Group is a collection of several affiliated companies, with the aim to provide an end-to-end integrated platform from development, investment, operational and asset management.
With shared values and behaviours ingrained across the various units, we are encouraged to act courageously and collaborate efficiently and are empowered to support each other to deliver solutions.
One of the key aspects that allows this, is the continuous knowledge sharing among the different companies and units.
Bluefield Partners LLP runs two core renewable energy strategies, could please share them with us?
Bluefield Partners LLP runs two types of strategies:
1) Long term, evergreen, yield focused
2) Short term, special situations, focussed on high capital gains
The longest example of our yield strategy is the 10-year old Bluefield Solar Income Fund which is focused on the acquisition and long term management of a diversified portfolio of low carbon assets in the UK. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2013 and it is a member of FTSE 250.
Our most recent special situation strategy was Bluefield Revive Solar SCSp, which reached an oversubscribed hard cap [last month], is a Luxembourg Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), focused on Italian operational solar assets. The vehicle focuses on the acquisition of solar energy assets located in Italy with technical, financial or operational underperformance, with the aim of performing turnaround activities on the assets, using our distinct end-to-end platform of experts.
All funds, including the examples above, are advised by the Bluefield Group, through its UK and European service companies providing asset management and advisory services. Their technical, financial, operational and ESG expertise is used to implement the vehicles’ investment strategies and enhance the operational capacity of the assets.
Bluefield Partners LLP has attracted over €1 billion into solar investment strategies, what is your next strategy?
We are currently focusing on the launch of new strategies in each of our core focus areas. We will be focussing specifically on the European renewable sector and will include a variety of renewable technologies. The strategies will be very complimentary, with different investment criteria, geography requirements and technology used, to ensure that we are able to accommodate a variety of requirements, following substantial product development.
All strategies will continue to be supported by the Bluefield Group companies, providing their expertise to promote the successful performance of the assets. As a renewable energy specialist, the strategies will be focused contributing to wider environmental and social objectives in our ambition to power a sustainable future.
Why did you choose Luxembourg as domicile for one of your investment fund?
As a regulated investment adviser, ensuring the correct and transparent compliance with all relevant aspects of our strategies is a key consideration when choosing the domiciliation of our funds.
Importantly, Luxembourg offers the right level of compliance and legal requirements which allow us to offer high standards of management and reporting of the vehicle for our investors, which is in line with the working standards of Bluefield. These standards are also met thanks to the strong expertise and quality offered by the various service providers operating in the funds sector.
